The official name of this temple is “Kyo-o Gokoku-ji”. It was built two years after the construction of Heiankyo as a temple for the protection of the royal castle. The five-story pagoda, a national treasure and the tallest wooden structure in Japan, is a familiar landmark in Kyoto. In addition to the five-story pagoda, there are many other valuable buildings and temple treasures, such as the Kondo Hall, where the main deity Yakushi Nyorai is enshrined, the lecture hall, which houses the “three-dimensional mandala,” a visual and three-dimensional representation of the teachings of esoteric Buddhism, and the Mikado, which was the residence of Kobo Ambassador Kukai. During the cherry blossom and foliage seasons, the temple is beautifully illuminated during special nighttime openings.
